The fundamentals of using Essential Grid.

Working with Post, Page and Custom Post Grid Content

Learn how to configure a grid to use content from within your own site

Using Internal WordPress Content

If you’d like your grid to use content that comes from your own WordPress site this guide will show you how.

To begin, go to the Source panel set the Based on option to Post, Pages and Custom Posts:

This will then allow you to choose three different types of content to use in your grids: Posts, pages and custom post types.

Let’s see what the available options are for using each.

Using Post Content

To use WordPress post content in your grid go to the Type and Category panel and set the Post Types option to Post:

Specifying a Category or Tag

When the Post Types option is set to Post, an option named Post Categories will appear:

If you just want to pull content in from all posts, you can leave this option set to its default, with nothing selected.

However if you’d like to restrict content to a certain category or tag, click to select the one you want to draw from in the Post Categories option:

Specifying Multiple Categories or Tags

If you’d like to draw from multiple categories or tags, hold down your CTRL/CMD key and click each item.

If you are choosing multiple categories/tags, the Category Relation option then becomes relevant:

The default setting is OR, and means a post only needs to be in one of the selected categories/tags to be included in the grid, e.g. “category one” or “category two”.

However if you such it to AND, a post will only be included in the grid if it is in all the selected categories/tags, e.g. “category one” and “category two”.

Removing Categories

To remove a category/tag from a multiple selection, hold down your CTRL/CMD key and click the item.

Or to remove all categories, click the Clear Categories button:

Using Page Content

To use WordPress post content in your grid go to the Type and Category panel and set the Post Types option to Page:

Selecting Pages

When the Post Types option is set to Page, a panel labelled Pages will appear, containing an option named Select Pages:

Even though you’ll see a list of pages that looks similar to the list of post categories we talked about above, selection of pages doesn’t happen through clicking inside that list.

Rather, you should click the small purple + button to the right of the Select Pages field:

A dialogue box with a list of the pages on your site will appear. You can either check the box to the left of each page you want to use, or check “Select All” at the top, then click the Add Selected button at the bottom right:

Each page you selected will then be given its own line, with a trash icon next to it you can click if you need to remove the page again:

Using Custom Posts

If your WordPress site has a plugin installed that adds custom post types, you can use those custom post types as your grid content source. For example, the WooCommerce plugin will add custom post types such as “product” and “variation”.

If such a plugin is installed you will see its custom post types available for selection under the Post Types option:

Selecting content from custom post types works in exactly the same way as it does with regular post types. To use all the posts under the custom post type, leave the Post Categories option at its default of having nothing selected, or make selections from the Post Categories option to restrict which posts appear in your grid.

Combining Post Types

A grid might use just one of the above described post types, however it can also use multiple post types together.

In order to combine post types just hold down your control or command key and select multiple settings in the Post Type option field. The options for all the selected post types will become available below:

On the next page we’ll learn how to use the Custom Grid source type to set up grids using a variety of individually selected content, such as YouTube videos and images from your gallery.
